Analysis of Perceptions of Safety Surveys

Analysis of Perceptions of Safety Surveys 2023

In November 2021, the Survey was sent out to Parents and Carers, staff and pupils.

In September 2023, the survey was sent out again. The survey for pupils was formulated and collated by the well-being and mental health lead in the school Louisa Williams,

These are the findings followed by common concerns and proposed actions.

Scale from 1-10 (1 being the least concerned to 10 being the most comfortable and assured)

Overall Summery findings;

  • Overall results are really positive.
  • Still some issues about perceived bullying. We do have a high number of pupils who struggle with social skills and can display difficult and sometimes dangerous behaviour. This is related to the concerns raised by staff about staffing levels in some classes and activities.
    • Action- The school has grown in size rapidly. We have recently had a high number of pupils join the school with ASC and SEMH- These pupils often have difficult and dangerous behaviour and require a high level of support to remain regulated and safe. This requires a high number of staff. This needs to be reflected on during the admissions process- classes are full.
    • Action - This needs to be discussed by the behaviour support team and SLT.
    • Action- This needs to be reflected on by the PSHE coordinator and incorporated further into the RSE and PSHE curriculum.
    • Action – The Zones of regulation are used across the school and be effective for many pupils in identifying their emotional states and supporting regulation. There are a high number of pupils who struggle to access this approach as they are working at a pre-formal level of emotional understanding and regulation. Discussion is needed to address how we can support pupils working at this level to access the zones of regulation.

  • Issues with the car park, fencing and gates.
    • Action – Results of the Survey to be discussed by the site team and SLT.
    • Action- site team and SLT to discuss raised issues about fencing and gates.
    • Action - - Discuss possible changes to parking spaces for parents. Site team and SLT.

  • Importantly the pupils were able to say how they feel and overall they are happy and feel safe in school.

Summary Findings from all surveys;

  • Generally, parents and carers, staff and pupils feel that John Grant School is a safe place to be.
  • Parents Carers and staff made suggestions as to how the site could be safer; gates being a common concern.
  • All felt that there needs to be further support for those pupils who witness or are affected by the behaviour of another pupil.
  • It has been a challenging time over the past few years due to restrictions and precautions related to Covid-19. Some parents carers and staff have felt the school should be more strict with these precautions and others feel the school is over-cautious.
  • Parents and Carers suggested further communication such as a regular newsletter would be beneficial.

Proposed Actions;

  • Review of site; gates around the school and how these could be made safer.
  • Inclusion of how we can develop support for pupils who are witnessed or effected by the behaviour of their peers to be added to the Whole School Improvement Plan so that it is given priority.
  • Continued review of the COVID-19 risk assessment and communicate this clearly with both staff and parents and carers.
  • Discuss how we can improve regular communication with parents and carers such as a regular newsletter.
