Specialist Provision for Autism

Kestrels, Sandpiper, Osprey, Avocet and Woodpecker Classes

There are 5 specialist class bases at John Grant School for pupils whose autism diagnosis presents the biggest barrier to accessing learning. Pupils may be based in the specialist provision from Key Stage 1 throughout their time here or they may move into or from the ‘mainstream’ part of the school.

Within this specialist provision pupils are supported through a range of specialist principles of approach including A highly structured environment, comprehensive visual support systems, structured teaching (informed by TEACCH / SCERTS principles of approach) Assistive and Augmentative Communication supports, and access to sensory processing support.

These classes are of smaller group sizes and have a higher staff ratio.
